Tuva & other animals

Wherever I go animals seem to find me or maybe I find them. From cats and dogs who choose to sit by my side, horses who come and greet me, to birds - often a Robin - who linger a little longer than expected, I have noticed a gentle, unspoken connection that has been part of my life for as long as I can remember.

I think this unspoken connection comes from respect and patience. Animals do not respond to force or noise; they respond to calm, kindness, and attention.

The connection became especially meaningful the day I rescued a stray cat. She was alone, cautious, and clearly unsure of the world around her. In fact she was barely able to eat due to a heavy dose of cat flu. I did not rush her. I simply showed up every day with a tin of tuna fish, a soft voice, stillness and space. Over time, her fear softened into trust and eventually, she chose to live with us.

The stray cat became known as Tuva because my darling partner loved Swedish antiques and it is the Swedish word for 'beautiful' or 'beloved'. Tuva certainly lived up to her name and whenever I was home alone she would come upstairs and curl up under my arm, we had an incredibly close bond, it was unconditional. Tuva was a daily reminder of how powerful compassion can be. Not only did she find a warm and loving home, I found a friend who loved me honestly. Our bond was not forced or planned; it grew naturally, the same way it did with my partner, as all the best relationships do.

Animals also have a way of seeing who you really are without words. I am grateful they see someone gentle and reassuring in me and I am honoured every time they choose to come close.

Love you Tuva x
